Environmental impact of concrete

ENG Concrete after water is second most widely used substance on Earth. Solidity and endurance makes it especially attractive material for the humankind. It serves as the base for the modern development of infrastructure. However, attractive material comes along with its high environmental impact. According to Chatham House, cement accounts 8% of global CO2 emissisons. This CO2 contribution mostly happens in the production process of cement. Concrete production is complex process and requires vast amount of energy, water, soil etc. However, there are other environmental impacts of concrete after post-production – in usage, like trapping heat on its surface causing more warming, tiny dust particles emerging from its surface which pollutes air or damaging fertile layer - topsoil.
